Understanding Mental Health Treatment Plans

Taking the first step towards seeing a psychologist can feel overwhelming, especially if you're unsure how Medicare works or whether you're eligible for a rebate.

One of the most common ways Australians access psychological therapy is through a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP), also known as a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP). This plan allows eligible people to receive Medicare rebates for appointments with registered psychologists and clinical psychologists.

Here's what you need to know.

What Is a Mental Health Treatment Plan?

A Mental Health Treatment Plan is a plan prepared by your General Practitioner (GP) to support your mental health care.

The plan outlines your current concerns, treatment goals, and the type of support that may benefit you. It also enables you to access Medicare rebates for eligible psychology services.

Many people access a Mental Health Treatment Plan for concerns such as:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Stress and burnout

  • Grief and loss

  • Trauma

  • Relationship difficulties

  • Panic attacks

  • Adjustment to life changes

  • Emotional wellbeing

Your GP will discuss your symptoms, ask some questions about your mental health, and together you'll decide whether a Mental Health Treatment Plan is appropriate.

How Many Psychology Sessions Does Medicare Cover?

A Mental Health Treatment Plan allows eligible clients to access up to 10 Medicare-rebated psychology sessions each calendar year.

The process usually works like this:

  1. Your GP prepares a Mental Health Treatment Plan and refers you to a psychologist.

  2. You attend your first course of treatment.

  3. Your psychologist provides your GP with a progress report.

  4. Your GP reviews your progress and, if appropriate, refers you for additional sessions.

Your psychologist will help guide you through this process.

Do I Need a Referral to See a Psychologist?

No.

You can book an appointment with a psychologist without a referral at any time.

However, if you would like to claim a Medicare rebate, you will generally need a Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral from your GP (or in some circumstances, a psychiatrist or paediatrician).

Some clients also choose to use private health insurance or pay privately without claiming Medicare.

What Happens During Therapy?

Every person's experience of therapy is different.

Your first appointment is an opportunity to get to know your psychologist, discuss what has brought you to therapy, and begin identifying your goals.

Depending on your needs, therapy may involve:

  • Learning practical coping strategies

  • Understanding patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviours

  • Exploring relationships and life experiences

  • Developing emotional resilience

  • Working towards meaningful and lasting change

At Gymea Lily Psychotherapy Centre, we recognise that there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Our clinicians draw from a range of evidence-based and insight-oriented therapies, tailoring treatment to each person's individual needs.

Which Therapies Might Be Used?

Your psychologist may recommend different therapeutic approaches depending on your goals and presenting concerns.

These may include:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

  • Schema Therapy

  • Trauma-informed therapy

  • Psychodynamic psychotherapy

  • Psychoanalytic psychotherapy

  • Attachment-focused therapy

  • Play therapy (for children)

  • Family therapy and parenting support

Some people benefit from short-term, goal-focused therapy, while others choose longer-term psychotherapy to better understand recurring emotional patterns and create lasting change. Read more about the different types of therapy our psychologists use here.

Do I Have to Use All 10 Sessions?

Not at all.

Some people feel that only a few sessions are enough to help them navigate a particular challenge.

Others choose to continue therapy beyond the Medicare-rebated sessions, particularly when working on more complex or longstanding concerns.

Your psychologist will regularly review your progress with you and discuss what approach best suits your needs.
